At just 10 km from our hotel you will find the charming city of Ravenna, a museum en plein air that is rich in wonders. It is a labyrinth of cobbled streets worn away by centuries of passage, surrounded by palazzi and churches bearing witness to the grandeur and wealth of the city in past ages.
Ravenna is a city of ancient origins dating back to Roman times, when it was chosen as the capital of the Western Roman Empire. It is famous and renowned for the beauty of its mosaics and for the monuments that have been listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, like the Mausoleum of Galla Placida, that was erected in the 5th century B.C. and is home to the oldest mosaic collection in the city.
Ravenna offers a world of culture to its visitors, like the not-to-be-missed Mausoleum of Theodoric with its spectacular domed roof made from a single block of stone. Among the churches worthy of a visit is the Basilica of Saint Vitale from the 6th century A.D. It has a characteristic octagonal plan and its interior contains spectacular mosaic panels portraying the emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora.
The Basilica of Saint Apollinaire Nuovo, this too dating back to the 6th century A.D., was commissioned by King Theodoric and has skillful decoration along the whole central nave. It also features a beautiful cylindrical bell tower. And the Neoniano (Cathedral) Baptistry , known as the most ancient monument in Ravenna, which has a charming domed roof covered in fine mosaic decoration.
Also of interest is the National Museum, which exhibits a vast collection of archeological finds from Byzantine and Roman times, while the Dante Museum shows relics and remains of the life of the famous poet.
